dir="RTL">Climate changes... causes and consequences "Hosted by Professor Dr. / Ahmed Saleh Abu Shanab, Professor at the Central Pesticide Laboratory at the Research Center Agricultural.
The discussion session addressed many important points about the human relationship with the environment and the damage that humans have caused to the environment during the past decades, especially in the era of the Industrial Revolution and the subsequent anomalous climate phenomena that affected health in the entire world. It turns out that the related impacts, such as drought, water freshness, clean air, and relative climate instability, are more severe in developing countries than in developed countries.
Where Dr. " Ahmed Saleh " explained that the problem of global warming is a very big problem and requires cooperation and solidarity to solve it. The overwhelming majority of authorities and researchers agree that humanity caused this crisis, but there are other points of view that the cause is cyclical natural effects of the universe, as happened in the ice ages and the extinction of dinosaur species... Etc. (There are attempts and plans drawn up by many countries to address the problem of climate change. They have allocated billions of dollars to invest in producing clean energy and seeking to reduce carbon emissions. ... The competent authorities and their activities:
And Dr. "Ahmed Saleh" explained that the United Nations was not isolated from the issue, but rather began climate negotiations in 1991 in the US state of Virginia within its framework, where it dealt with all processes and methods
About global change (climate, ozone, air pollution, biodiversity, desertification, drought), and regulating the consumption of toxic chemicals, although the United Nations began this early work and did not succeed in reducing
Greenhouse gas emissions, which seemed unable to protect the world from climate change, alerted us to the problem at least, and it is an important effort, despite its small size, as it created international awareness of the size of the problem and methods of treatment, and paved the way, even if relatively, for countries and governments to work together or even individually to address this serious problem, which witnessed many treaties and protocols in 1992, 2007, 2009
Then, many innovative examples were discussed that developed countries have begun to use to limit the phenomenon of climate change and reduce global warming.
Dr. Ahmed Saleh mentioned many examples that could contribute significantly to reducing the phenomenon of global warming, such as:
- Improving the Egyptian permissible standards for pollutants, which are currently two or three times higher than the international standards for some pollutants.
- Improve environmental protection laws and environmental executive regulations to be more stringent, reduce legal loopholes, and eliminate easing at the expense of the environment.
- Building capabilities and raising the efficiency of environmental monitoring and inspection agencies and law enforcement agencies.
- Increasing green spaces within cities and encouraging afforestation
- Raising the efficiency of energy use in all areas.
- Switching away from the use of coal and finding clean and sustainable alternatives.
- Accelerating the transition towards generating electricity from renewable energies and supporting it.
- Moving industries towards adopting cleaner production techniques and increasing energy efficiency.
- Moving energy-intensive, emitting industries out of cities and population centers.
- Provide safe and affordable public transportation systems to reduce the use of private cars.
- Building road networks that are friendly to pedestrians and cyclists and encouraging these methods.
- Increasing the efficiency of cars and vehicles and using clean fuels.
- Improve the management and recycling of solid, municipal and agricultural waste to reduce open burning.
- Improving, updating, making available and disseminating information related to monitoring air pollution and facilitating its follow-up to the public and those concerned with the environment, and providing an electronic platform as an environmental observatory 24 hours a day and a day.
- Increase the number of monitoring stations and distribute them in proportion to the area of governorates and polluting industries in each governorate.
- Record and make available all pollutants such as 2.5 micron particles, lead, ozone and ammonia.
- Modifying the method of recording pollutant readings to comply with World Health Organization recommendations.
The session was attended by approximately 95 participants via Zoom online from various specializations and fields.
At the end of the session, questions and inquiries were opened for the participants and answered.
